Subject Benchmark Statement

Subject Benchmark Statements describe the nature of study and the academic standards expected of graduates in specific subject areas. They show what graduates might reasonably be expected to know, do and understand at the end of their studies.

Below you will find the full Subject Benchmark Statement for Architectural Technology. Alongside it, we have also published a summary designed to provide a short and accessible overview of the main Statement for students, employers and academics.

About this subject

""

Architectural technology focuses on the anatomy and physiology of buildings in terms of building structures and systems, materials, and components, fabric and services relating to production, performance and processes underpinned by science, architectural engineering, and technology.

Architectural technology seeks design and technology solutions for durable, safe, sustainable, efficient buildings that meet people’s needs, as well as regulatory requirements. It is an important subject for new structures and, increasingly, retrofitting existing buildings. The study of Architectural Technology considers health, safety and welfare issues, quality of life, social well-being and ethical responsibilities to meet the requirements of all stakeholders.

Professor Sam Allwinkle
Chair of the Subject Benchmark Statement Advisory Group for Architectural Technology

This revised publication has built upon the strengths of the current Subject Benchmark Statement in Architectural Technology and also in response to the challenges relating to the emerging agendas of environment, climate change and sustainability, building safety and regulation, and the fast-changing use of technology relating to design to optimise the production and performance of buildings.

This new publication will continue to set the educational standards for honours and master's education in Architectural Technology education and underpin the routes into the profession and employment.

It will help shape and inform the future through and by the development and delivery of diverse and innovative university courses and continue to maintain and enhance the high standards in UK Architectural Technology education that is recognised globally as world class.
