QAA statement on media coverage of Subject Benchmark Statement for Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research

In response to media attention over the recently published Subject Benchmark Statement for Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research, triggered by a letter sent by academics to the media, QAA has issued a statement.
‘Subject Benchmark Statements are written by groups of academics from the relevant discipline. Institutional autonomy and academic freedom are crucial principles, and therefore the Statements do not mandate academics to teach specific content - they are a reflective tool to support course design and are not compulsory. We agree with the letter’s assertion that course content should be taught by academics in line with their own expertise and academic judgement.’
For clarity, this latest story refers to the same Subject Benchmark Statement that received press coverage in November 2022. Please see our website for our statement from November and to find out more about Subject Benchmark Statements.
QAA is conscious that a large number of highly respected academics are part of the Subject Benchmark Statement working groups each year. The Statements are a highly valued sector-owned reference point and we are extremely grateful for the personal commitment to them shown by every member of the working groups - and particularly the chairs and deputy chairs. This work has real impact on students and academic communities and we are proud to hold the pen and convene the working groups.
