New International Insights resource focuses on sustainable development in TNE

Date: July 22 - 2024

QAA has published a special International Insights resource which introduces a range of ideas through which to explore and promote issues of sustainable development in transnational education (TNE).

The guidance document is authored by De Montfort University's Dr Andrew Reeves, Academic Lead for Education for Sustainable Development and Dr Manjeet Ridon, Associate Dean International (Education, Sustainability & EDI),  Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities.

This new resource looks at issues to consider and practical steps that can enable TNE partnerships to impact upon the sustainable development agenda.

It details a range of key issues which can inform discussions of sustainability among those involved in developing, delivering and supporting TNE partnerships, regulators of TNE partnerships, and students wishing to hold their TNE programmes to account on sustainability issues.

It also outlines how higher education institutions can offer global sustainability leadership through their international collaborations and presents 10 top tips for making progress in addressing sustainable development issues through TNE.

‘We're very grateful to our colleagues at De Montfort University for their work in creating this valuable new resource,’ said Julia Baylie, Quality Specialist for International Insights at QAA. ‘We’re sure this will prove immensely useful for colleagues working in TNE across the sector.’

‘TNE provision is typically considered on a transactional basis, but our experience and analysis suggest that it can play a key role in driving action on sustainable development', said Andrew Reeves. ‘We hope that more institutions will harness the positive opportunities TNE offers to enhance access to quality higher education and to develop equitable partnerships to address social, economic and environmental challenges.’

This resource is part of QAA's International Insights series. QAA publishes these resources to support members in developing, managing and supporting international partnerships and to provide contextual information about the higher education landscape, quality assurance and TNE in specific countries.
