Terms of reference for Advice and Guidance writing groups 2025
Publication date: 27 Mar 2025
Being part of a writing group offers a fantastic opportunity to expand networks and professional contacts and to collaborate with colleagues from across the UK and from various parts of the sector to produce a resource that will be widely recognised inside and beyond the UK sector.
QAA will be selecting writing group members and expert readers from across the four nations of the UK and to represent the diversity of providers and students across the country.
Writing groups comprise colleagues of different levels and roles from quality assurance and enhancement professionals, academics, students, and student representative body staff, along with those who have specific expertise in the topic addressed by each Advice and Guidance topic.
Writing groups have two roles within them – writers and expert readers:
I’ve enjoyed my time in the writing group as it has allowed me to work with colleagues from other institutions to explore how the Quality Code can be used most effectively across a variety of institutional contexts. There have been some really great discussions and debates which have got me thinking!
Dr Graham Garforth, Head of Academic Quality and Standards, The Open University
If you are interested in being part of a writing group, either as a writer or expert reader, you can find out about the role requirements and expectations in the Terms of Reference. To express your interest in joining a writing group please complete this form. Each form submission enables you to apply for a writer and a reader role (they don’t have to be the same topic). If you wish to put yourself forward for multiple roles and topics you will need to complete and submit separate forms. We will not be accepting expressions of interest via email.

The Quality Code has been a vital source of information and guidance for me throughout my career in higher education. I have really valued the opportunity to contribute my knowledge and experience of quality assurance in different types of UK higher education providers as part of a writing group, so that those in similar roles can continue to benefit from the advice and guidance published by QAA. I have also enjoyed working with colleagues from across the sector, engaging in interesting discussions and building new connections that will benefit my own professional development.
