A review by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) has expressed confidence in the University of St Andrews' progress in continuing to monitor, review and enhance its higher education provision to enable effective arrangements to be in place for managing academic standards and the quality of the student experience.
The review was carried out by a team of three independent reviewers who were appointed by QAA. The review visit took place on 31 January 2024.
The team identified the following areas of good practice:
- The University demonstrates an effective approach to strategic planning and delivery of learning and teaching. The University has effective monitoring and evaluation to ensure implementation of strategic goals.
- The positive impact of the Reimagining Representation project is clear in the increased diversity and expertise of students participating in university committees and working groups, and is a development well-received by both staff and students.
- The University Strategy 2022-27 demonstrates a commitment to student-centred, high-quality, research-led digital education that promotes global online learning and emphasises diversity. The Strategy is enabling the University to challenge its traditional approach to teaching and to embrace innovation in technology and pedagogy.
QAA also made the following recommendation:
- In its current review of the module evaluation questionnaires process, the University should consider its approach to support a more consistent and diverse level of engagement with students.
Professor Dame Sally Mapstone, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Andrews said: 'On behalf of the University I am delighted that the Quality Enhancement and Standards Review has confirmed confidence in the continued effectiveness of the University of St Andrews’ approaches to maintaining academic quality and standards and enhancing the student learning experience.
'We are pleased that the review team commended our approach to strategic planning and delivery of learning and teaching and commended recent enhancements made to student representation and partnership, particularly the Reimagining Representation project; and our strategic approach to grow digital education.
I would like to thank the students and staff who contributed to the review and to the QAA review team for their considered approach to engaging with the University.'
